This is the #1 thing that annoys me when people discuss Subarus and it’s been the same meme talk for the past 2 generations of WRX. No, they do not look like a corolla. I get it, your opinions are not your own and just the person’s next to you with the meme sickness with an unknown patient zero. The current WRX “looks like a corolla” and the past generations was great and amazing looking.
Let’s look at the GC8, the car everyone says is the best and look the best and has Stage 0 Corolla disease since “each new passing WRX generation looks more and more like a corolla”.
Now let’s look at a 96 corolla.
Hmm.... same lights, same grill, same shape. Holy shit... it looks like a corolla. SHOCKING since it’s based on their economy car that was meant to compete with a Corolla.
Lets look at the 2017 corolla and WRX.
How do these cars look in any way similar?
This looks far more similar.
Now can we stop with the Corolla comments or upvoting them or clicking like on them? Seriously. Anyone who thinks these cars look anything similar to a Corolla at all are completely incapable of thinking for themselves.
Here are random years of Corolla I googled to further put the nail in this coffin:
06:
2010:
2014:
To no surprise none of them look like any generation of Subaru WRX or STI.

I think ‘looks like a Corolla’ is a euphemism for ‘looks bland’.

Meanwhile when it was called the Evo X it looked great from these same memers.
What do these people want from the STI? It looks like it should look. Or do they want the fugly yet radical 2017 Corolla design ironically? Or the Juke? Or the last-gen Mazdaspeed 6?
The Focus RS looks about as “bland” as the STI. Meanwhile the Golf R which is about as bland looking and as same looking as the previous cars as you can get is never talked down about.
All this leads me to just write this off as ignorant memetalk from people who don’t know any better.

To expand on what I was saying in the same sentence they talk about how the current car looks like this but talk up the GC8 posting pictures of it.

Well, let me start by saying car aesthetics are subjective. Nobody will have tastes which line up exactly.
Let’s start by looking at the new STI:
Still has the trademark scoop, handbag spoiler and gold wheels (though those have been missing until recently).
Now here’s a GC8. Key features are the same, I think it’s really down to the execution.
You see, the new WRX has the same ingredients but doesn’t flaunt them in the same way the original (or even second gen) did. In the old car the scoop sticks out more, the curves in the fenders and bumpers are exaggerated plenty more and the overall package is much lighter making it look more like a sports car than a modified compact.
I’d say it’s also down to the fact that the new Impreza tries to look ‘grown up’. The older models all had a sort of yobbish style which made them a bit distinctive. For example the front ends. The GC8 had huge rally-esque foglights while the bugeye, blobeye and hawkeye buldged, diverting attention to the aggressive lights and grilles. The new cars look more like a normal compact with performance bumpers on. It doesn’t help that the new WRX is offered in less distinctive trim (most colour options are fairly muted, wagon with the huge C pillar is gone and gold wheels aren’t usually equipped).
That should wrap things up. I agree that these ‘memers’ go over the top and contradict themselves, but the new WRX still isn’t achieving the same things as its predecessors in my eyes.
Also the Evo X, Focus RS and Golf R each have their own reasons for looking good.

You seem overly bitter over something that has zero effect on your quality of life.

Easily the most Corolla looking WRX.
Listen, if they didn’t want people to say they look like a Corolla, they should make it not look like a Corolla.
Of course they have been partially owned by Toyota since 2006, so there’s that...

My favorite is how the new mustangs “look like an accord”
Uhh...
